About the Department of English:

South Salmara College is one of the important higher educational institutions in South-Salmara-Mankachar District situated on the bank of the river Brahmaputra. The positive link between education and development has been accepted and established. Hence, there is a need to understand various fields of education. To fulfil this need, the college has introduced the department of English since its establishment in 1986. The English Department has been providing regular courses of Three Years Degree Course ( T.D.C.) in which Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) is a stream. The Department has been being taught English (General Course), as well as Alternative English for B. A. students under Gauhati University since its establishment. In 2018, the department has hosted honours for the interested students and a number of students having honours course in English have already completed their graduation with flying colours. There is well equipped separate departmental room with departmental Library. Mr.Jamir Uddin Sikder was the founder teacher. At present, 3 (three) faculty members, such as Dr. Riazul Hoque, Sheikh Azmal Hoque and Rezaul Islam, have been rendering the responsibility as regular employees in English department. Amongst the three, one faculty member i.e. Head of the Department is SLET qualified and Ph. D. holder and other two members are SLET qualified. All the faculty members are busy with the regular duties and innovative mechanism like seminar, workshop and so on. Departmental seminars are conducted among the students time to time.

English Department of South Salmara College has been doing its accomplishments keeping in mind cohesive relationship with the students and other stakeholders. The Department has been providing quality education in the field of English Literature and Language. Strength of the students offering English is continuously increasing. The students successfully passing at the university examination is always above 90%. The department has a library consistd of 120 books. The students are given support with the books of the library

Scope and importance of the department:

      English plays an important role in the field of education. It is taught as a compulsory subject in most of the states in the country. It is the medium of instruction in technical, medical, law, science, commerce and other institutions. It is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy and tourism. Moreover, English Language is needed for studying abroad, conducting interviews, attending lectures, hanging out with friends, or even landing a job after graduation.

     English is the medium of communication in most schools, colleges, and universities, especially those who are studying overseas. Learning English help students to understand books, lectures, assignments and so on. Moreover, it plays a vital role in the business world, being the most commonly used language and a prerequisite for many employers making quality English language courses a valuable investment to enhance employability prospects.

Aims and Objective

The main aims and objectives of the English department is to educate and encouraged the spirit of higher studies among the students in English Literature and language. Moreover, the department has been trying its level best effort to create the students of rural and char areas as the responsible citizen of India.

  •  To enable the learner to communicate effectively in English and to cope themselves up with the trends of globalization.
  • To develop interest in appreciation of Literature of the world.
  • To develop and integrate the use of the four language skills i.e. Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking .
  • To provide healthy and student centric teaching learning environment.

    Job Opportunities          

    The region of our college is attached with the state of Meghalaya where many young graduates can be engaged as a teachers and other official jobs by developing their speaking capability in English, building smart and dashing personality and making self-confidence to serve any other technical and job oriented  company. So, we try our level best to get job or engagement in various sectors after graduation. Besides, English graduates as well as post graduates, in addition to doing jobs in various colleges and universities, are having various job opportunities in reputed institutes and organization in the country.

    Admission Process:

               Date of admission and filling up the admission forms are published in college website, college Notice Board and by roadside banners. Admission of B.A. first semester in both Major and Minor English is done strictly on the basis of merit. The merit list of the selected candidates is published in college Website and on college Notice Board.

Courses & Programme Outcomes


A well equiped central Library of the College is exist with sufficient books which includes Text books, Reference books and Rare books. The Library has well furnished reading room for both Faculty Members and the students.

The Committee for Library is entrusted with ensuring optimum utilization of the College Library by students, Teachers and other users. The selection of books and journals to be subscribed, stock verification, purchase of new books and overall functions of the Library are managed and co-ordinated by the Committee.


The library rules are as follow

  • The library card is valid till the end of the session every year, subject to further renewal, if all the conditions are fairly fulfilled by the holder.
  • A fine of Rs. 50/- will be levied if the card is lost.
  • Books will be issued only for 7 (Seven) days after which fine will be charged at the rate of Rs. 2/- per day.
  • This card entitles the holder to borrow four books in TDC course.
  • This card is not transferable
