Department of Assamese of South Salmara College has been in existance since the stablishment of the college in 1986. The founder faculty of the department was Nur Hussain Miah. Since its existance the department is offering Assamese General Course(MIL) and Elective Assamese Courses. Assamese Major Course was introduced from the session 2002-03. The department has only two nos of sanctioned faculties namely 1. Dr. Mozibor Rahman, Sr. Assistant Professor & HoD, Assamese and 2. Shohidur Rohman, Assistant Professor, Assamese. Currently, the department has one Guest faculty namely Nur Hussain Miah, who was the founder faculty of the department. The department has a Library having 298 nos of books and journals. The department has an wall magazine namely 'DAPON'. Intake capacity for Major Course is 50 seats and 300 seats for regular/core course. The department presently offering the following Courses:

Programme Outcome:
From UG Assamese Honour programme students will be able to learn broadely about the history of Assamese Language and Literature and also they will be learn various Early, Romantic and Modern Assamese Poems, Short stories, Novels, Dramas and Proses. Students will able to learn about Literature and Assamese Culture as well as dialects of Assamese Language. After passing out with major in Assamese students can opt for Post Graduate in Literature, Linguistics and Cultural Studies and after that they can also opt for Research Course. They can engage themselves as teaching related jobs(In Schools, Colleges and Universities) and jobs like Reporter, Proofreader, News-reader etc.
Programme Specific Outcome:
After completion of the programme students will gain informationson the Assamese culture and tradition. The course will provide skills in creative writing and competence in Asaamese Language and empower them with communicative skills. It gives knowledge on the life of famous Assamese Poets and Authors as well as their famous literary works.
